So it´s a rap, I got my own Geländewagen - the most robust and capable four-by-four vehicle there´s ever made. It´s a G400 model, with a four-litre V8 diesel engine that produces enough torque to climb Mount Everest or split the red sea apart (560 Nm.)
Well, You know me, when I get something it has to be the premier stuff, I won´t settle for the second best, and in my mind the G-wagon are the king amongst the 4x4´s, superior to the Toyota Land Cruisers, Land Rover Defenders and Jeep Wranglers, and as a sadly result also far more expensive. But it´s okay, the money issue that is, because I have a lot of plans for expeditions lined up for the future, witch will take numerous year to fulfil. One more trip to Morocco, one to Algeria and at least two more back to my beloved Iceland. I might actually also use as a base to visit The Trysil River in Norway to fly fish for Grayling in the heat of the summer once more.
It have been a busy fortnight, driving the car here and there to get the technical stuff sorted and also dealing with all the other practicalities needed when you those to import a car into the country yourselves. But it´s all in the past now, and just a nice learning experience, so now I´m waiting to learn for the authorities how much I´ll have to pay in taxes to get the car registered here in Denmark.
The car has been at the mechanics to get a service and a thorough overhaul to ensure it will endure the 3 weeks battering in The Western Saharan. To another workshop to get the car rebuild as a van, in order to full fill the requirements needed to ease the tax pain a bit. And finally I had to get an technical inspection of the car to ensure the car is legal, and also a tax inspection, needed as a foundation for the tax bill.
Next step will be to transform the car into a proper over landing vehicle. I´ll need to fit some new all-terrain tires, under-body protection and an additional auxiliary battery to power the CB-radio, the fridges and other stuff, so that it will not drain the starter battery. I also need to fit some kind of storage system, and a platform to hold the madras needed to get to sleep properly in the car during the trip. I also need to carry a few 20 litres jerry-cans to ensure the required 800 km. off-road range, and with the estimated high fuel consumption driving in the dunes in Sahara I will need approximately an additional 60-80 litres of diesel fuel beside the fitted tank with a capacity of 96 litres.
Also 3 jerry cans of 20 litre each for water supply are needed. A air-compressor to re-inflate tires after airing down also has to be stored, and I will need a recovery kit of some kind if the car unexpectedly gets stuck in the dunes. Then add some tools to deal with mechanical and electrical issues if these kind of problems are encountered at some time - witch the hopefully won´t be.
Fingers crossed I hope to hear from the authorities very soon, so I can get the final paperwork sorted with insurance and a registration certificate. I have been driving the car for a week now on temporary number plates, and it´s a pure joy, and I can´t wait to get under way towards The Western Sahara and Morocco.
Between january 21st and 24th, the conditions were perfect for a spectacular display of aurora borealis in north-western Norway. We usually don´t get that many chances to see the northern lights at these latitudes. The last time I remember seeing them here was in 2007, so my 3 friends and I decided to go out and look for them.
Thanks to all the people at dynamicperception.com for their stage zero dolly and all the knowlegable users over at the timescapes.org forum ( forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3/index.php ) for sharing their experiences with timelapsing.
And especially my friends Smyczka & Kostas... If you weren´t here, I would never have climbed all those mountains. Hope to see you again soon.
Lightroom 4 are around the corner. At present time it´s not a finished product, but as such you can download it free of charge to try and give feedback to Adobe
So I made my decision..., I´m of to Frankfurt, Germany, by airplane this week to potential buy a Geländewagen and import it to Denmark.
I have been looking at different adventure vehicles within the last year or so. And now my eyes, and mind, are set for a German Mercedes Benz Geländewagen, the toughest off-road vehicle there is in this world, with a center diff-lock, front and rear diff-lockers.
As I´m going to take the second row passages seat out anyway in order to rebuild it to a expedition vehicle to tour The Western Sahara within a few weeks time, I´m going to register the car with just a 50 % tax rate, rather than the normal 180 % tax.
Later, in a few years time, I might sell the Volkswagen Touareg, and use the money to pay the last amount in taxes and restore the back-row seats, we will see. I actually don´t need two 4x4´s, and to pay road taxes and insurance on to cars and a motorcycle might be a bit overkill.
I guess I just got lost
Being someone else.
I tried to kill the pain,
But nothing ever helped.
I left myself behind,
Somewhere along the way
Hoping to come back around
To find myself someday
Lately I´m so tired of waiting for you
To say that it´s OK.
Tell me please
Would you one time just let me be myself
So I can shine
With my own light.
Let me be myself.
Would you let me be myself?
I´ll never find my heart
Behind someone else.
I´ll never see the light of day
Living in this cell.
It´s time to make my way
Into the world I knew.
And then take back all of these times
That I gave in to you
Lately I´m so tired of waiting for you
To say that it´s OK.
For a while,
If you don´t mind,
Let me be myself
So I can shine
With my own light.
Let me be myself.
That´s all I´ve wanted from this world,
Is to let me be me.
Would you one time
Oh, let me be myself
And let me be me.
Only a few handfuls of weeks away from departure on the Morocco and Western Sahara adventure I´m actually having this itch to consider buying a MB G-class
For countless years the German "go anywhere" Geländewagen have been a favorite car of mine. The best all-wheel-drive car ever made, and surely one a the most iconic 4x4´s along with the Land Rover Defender. Like the Defender have had a 25 year anniversary, the Geländewagen have been made for more than 30 years to date, with production finally coming to a hold this summer (2012).
The G-wagon have been regularly updated, and today are a full modern car in every aspect, apart from maybe the on-road comfort. The Geländewagen have solid axles front and rear, because this is what, together with coil-spring suspension, gives the superior off-road capabilities. The only car true to solid-axel design to date are, apart form the Geländewagen, the Land Rover Defender and the Jeep Wrangler.
The Geländewagen are one of the most expensive cars Mercedes produces, with 80 % of the production being hand-made. As a result of the high price tag on this car there´s only a few Geländewagen´s imported to Denmark. And I will have to look to Germany to get one for myself. I have been looking into all the different issues and regulations you will meet when you import a car to Denmark as a private person.
I might catch a plane to Germany this week to look at a Geländewagen. But it´s a tuff decision, I´ll have to spend a fair amount of my bank savings on this project. But it will get me a lovely car, and one of the most capable and durable off-road vehicles in the world, - if not the best one. The Geländewagen comes with 3 diff-locks as standard (from post MY 2001 type 463) and naturally has the Mercedes superior build quality.
And after a few years of hard savings I´ll have restored the former glory of the bank account, and as you might know I´m not the type of person who will stock for the old ages or bad days, cause who knows when, and if, they will arrive, - so live your life as you want to, I don´t want to worry to much. I´m confident I´ll float if a flood arrives at some point, I don´t want to look back later in life and regret not daring to do and get what I want from life, and I´m actually getting a pretty clear picture of this these days. I love the adventure and expedition-like holidays the most. I´m comfort being alone in desolated places, I actually love it the most, the solitude, making my own decisions without any interference or distractions.
After a bit of rebuilding I´ll have my most wanted expedition vehicle, and I´ll be ready to tour Iceland ones more, be able to visit the Sahara again later this year, as I might want to drive to the Nigerian part of Sahara this time.
I´m regularly checking Vincent Laforets blog, and found this one. Great idea
For those of you who don´t know Vincent, he made the first famous movie film with the EOS 5D MKII and made an transition from shooting still photography to movies
"Head wind is an inspiring phenomenon: Every time I come home from riding the mountains, my mind is full of new impressions. This short film sums up some of the simple yet complex insights that struck me while riding my mountainbike"
Enjoy. And please share your learnings.

A collection of some of the greatest time-lapse sequences I have seen for some time. I´m still amazed at how much effort and time people invest in doing time-lapse photograpy
Fegurð, - actually a fashion video, but there´s some really lovely video and time-lapse shoots from around Iceland so I would like to share it
Time-lapses and video are shoot in various places in Iceland, - and as you might know at present time I just love Iceland. Shoots were made at the Dakota Airplane wreck, at the Jökulsálón lagoon, and at an abandoned fishing village in the West fjords
An Epic Adventure: The Australian Outback´s Ultimate Off-Road Test
Always loved these well build German Geländewagen, the mighty Mercedes Benz G-class witch have been in production for more than 30 years now.
If the bank would allow it, this would be the overland vehicle of my choice, period. I will outperform the Land Rover Defender in a breeze.
This story makes me want to do this randone thing even more, looks like god fun
"In a lot of ways, this is the antithesis of the modern ski porn flick. A lot of rock star skiers and not much skiing! Ha! Well, hopefully having a narrative helps the piece along. It was a tough piece to put together with all the different characters. I decided to focus the story on Sage and Lucas and was hoping the piece would give people a sense of who those two characters are besides being rock star skiers/snowboarders. I often feel like the whole process of skiing and who the skiers actually are gets lost in most of the films today."

Take what you want from me
Take what you can
And then hide it somewhere I can´t see
Out of my hands
Do what it takes to make you feel better
Never forget that you
You´re nobody´s man
I love the way you set me off
With a stroke of your hand
And your puzzled look when we make love
That you don´t understand
But nothing I´ve got will make you feel better
At the break of dawn you´ll still
Be nobody´s man
Nobody feels the weight of your mission
Nobody can set you free
Nobody knows the way to your fortune
Nobody and least of all...
Me
So come and lay by my side
In my castle of sand
Let´s love til the early tide
Breaks down the dam
Stay if you want for worse or for better
But never forget that you
You´re nobody´s man
Nobody feels the weight of your mission
Nobody can set you free
Nobody knows the way to your fortune
Nobody and least of all...
Me
You... You... You... You...
Nobody feels the weight of your mission
Nobody can set you free
Nobody knows the way to your fortune
Nobody and least of all...

In the last round of 5D Mark III rumorations, it´s stated that the 5D Mark III might make an introduction prior to the 2012 NAB Show in April. And that’s just what the latest “solid” rumors suggest
Canon Rumors has posted what it considers a solid rumor from a known source that the Canon 5D Mark III would be introduced in late-March or early-April and have availability before Summer 2012. I would also expect more details, or perhaps a timeline, concerning the Canon 4K Cinema DSLR teased in November.
Previous rumors have suggested that 5D Mark III would be heavily-oriented toward the video market and would feature no more than an 18MP sensor (perhaps the same as the 1D X).
Come January 2012 I have owned and used my 5D MKII for there years, and I´m really really happy with it, - so I will hold on to for next year I think, if there´s a really new stunning must have feature I might consider a new MKIII. I´ll keep my MKII for back-up purposes, and might consider another for a second camera as prices fall or secondhand items hits the sales.
A pick of the images I shoot this summer of the old Dakota airplane wreck found on Iceland
(All images: Canon EOS 5D MKII, 17-40 mm. f/4.0L lens)
All the annoying circular blurry circles in the images are raindrops on the lens, it was raining quite a bit during the shoot, and the hard winds blowing from the nearby cost-line did´t help at all. I managed to edit some of the droplets in Lightroom though.
Iceland was named the ‘Best Adventure Travel Destination’ at the annual
Sunday Times Travel Magazine Readers Awards 2011
The waterfall Seljalandfoss, one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L IS zoom lens)
Iceland beat stiff competition from runners-up Norway and Switzerland. The country was praised for its ‘lunar landscapes’ and wide range of adventure activities on offer.
The award comes hot on the heels of two other recent accolades for the country, with Iceland having been awarded ‘Best in Travel’ in the annual Lonely Planet ‘Reader’s Choice Awards,’ as well as being included in National Geographic Traveler’s pick of the ‘Best of the World 2012.’
I you, like me, love traveling, beautiful landscapes and city scenery, all put together in a well edited moving picture accompanied by some nice music tunes, this is for you
From the author: "This is the first out of five Episodes about a trip to SouthEast Asia in Fall 2010. Stefan, Clemens and I were travelling in a Landrover through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for 2 months. Of course, we brought our little DSLRs to capture every great moment of this memorable journey."

As we unlike last year haven´t seen any snowfall what so ever this winter, I thought I could show you some
(Canon EOS 5D MKII, 17-40 mm. f/4.0L lens)
So i found a few time-lapse sequences I shoot last year during our skiing holiday in Trysil on my Mac. Had to put them together quickly and upload to my Vimeo account, enjoy some views to the bitter cold winter evenings... Marry Christmas!
From Abobe: Get creative with your digital video using the Motion workspace in Photoshop CS5 Extended. Make basic adjustments to color balance, tone, curves, and more. Or experiment with one-of-a-kind video-editing features including lens corrections and the ability to apply stunning, hardware-accelerated effects filters with the Pixel Bender plug-in.
The North Face company set together a promo video to document they are thinking of sustainability, are this serious, or just some clever move to look deeply involved in environmental issues
From the director: "An adventure to Taiwan to some of the largest factories on the planet, to help The North Face tell their sustainability story for the first time to the general public.
I think I worked harder on this project than anything else in 2011, the road to sustainability is certainly complicated and hard to communicate. After working with TNF on an athlete level for the last 6 years it was an honor to go deep behind the scenes and learn about these important initiatives in this way."
So it actually seems there is a growing understanding and devotion going into dealing with the escalating issues connected to climate changes, It´s sure a positive thing, - but I can´t help sitting back with the impression that this seems a bit superficial.
One spring ago
We sensed some cupids flow
Last year in May
Frail love came here to stay
One day in June
One hazy afternoon
Where daffodils did sigh
We found the clear blue sky
Right there love purged time so:
Forever you´ll stay mine
Be it winter
Be it dark clouds
Be it nightmares full of ghosts
Through the wild waves
Through the snow storms
We will always be each others coasts
New Zealand, about stunning landscape and the fantastic riding it offers
From the author: With a small population and virtually no trail access issues, the riding is almost limitless. Probably like it was fifty years ago in the U.S. We travelled throughout the South Island from Queenstown to the Craigieburn Forest, experiencing amazing singletrack and the laid back NZ lifestyle. A big thanks to Kashi Leuchs, our NZ distributor and all-aournd good guy for playing tour guide on the trip.
So why on earth do they do it, embark on this über manly challenge to race around the world powered only by the wind, passing some of the most dangerous oceans on the planet, in the fastest mono hull sailing yachts ever made in the history of mankind
My conclusion and answer to my own question will be: for the adventure, for the challenge.
You might not be aware of it, but at present time six of the fastest sailing yachts in the world are on their way from South Africa towards Abu Dhabi in Saudi Arabian, on leg 2 of the VOLVO Around The World Ocean Race.
The Race Around The World have a stunning history, and are one the biggest challenges for the 10 men big crews know to man; nearly no sleep, demanding and hard physical work and a menu of only freeze-dried food will be the order of the day. Several crew members have lost their life´s in the long history of the race. As a prof of the danger, this year 3 of the 6 yachts suffered mechanical failure during the first leg from Spain to South Africa. Two broke their masts, one had a collapse in the front part of the boat, leading to a massive leak and a much needed repair. And in the ongoing leg 2 one boat have had mechanical failure in the mast, again, and had to pull out of the race.
The 10 men big crew will only be allowed to sleep for two hours at a time, at the optimum. They will be tested to their full physical potential; as even the cargo in the hull, like food and sails, will have to be shifted around and rearranged endlessly inside the hull in order to optimize the balance in the boat to best fit the direction of wind and waves, and the boats current boat speed. The crew will have to do endlessly sail shift, - as often as the change in wind and sea will demand, all sail maneuvers must be powered by the crew themselves; - to my best knowledge they carry up to 20 different sails.
The navigator and tactician on board will have to constantly estimate local weather situations and review weather forecast in order to make the optimum of the shifting wind direction, wind speed, size of waves, direction of the waves and direction of ocean current.
This race is one of the biggest test of man, his physical capabilities and skills, and of the material. These boats are the fastest mono hull vessels ever build, made out of only high tech stuff like carbon fiber and Kevlar, even the mast are made from carbon fiber, these yachts are the Formula One racers of the sea.
As you can read from the above I just love the Volvo Around The World Ocean Race, and deeply admire the men whom participate in this epic race of yachts.
Every year is made up of countless moments that humble us, terrify us, sadden us. Moments that make us laugh, cringe, shake our heads in disbelief or wonder
From LIFE.com: Photographers strive to capture those moments, to tell us something of the times we live in. This gallery presents the pictures that did just that over the past year: In a photo that neatly captures the chaotic, earnest, rag-tag nature of the insurgent force that battled Col.
Muammar Gaddafi´s military for most of 2011, rebels fighters scatter after coming under fire from pro-Gaddafi troops outside the town of Ras Lanuf in mid-March. Gaddafi himself was captured and subsequently killed on October 20; three days later, Libya´s National Transitional Council announced the end of the country´s civil war.

Hvirvelvinden i din sjæl
Hvirvelvinden i din sjæl
Nøgler klirrer i din lomme. Ord der synger i dit hoved
Hvorfor blev det aldrig sommer? Blev den revet op med rod?
Elskende vandrer trygt langs stranden.
Hvirvelvinde i din sjæl
I´m getting tired of downloading music from TDC Play and coverting them in order to play them on my SONOS audio system
So as a Premium Spotify service cost DKK 99,00 per month, this seemed as a perfect alternative. But seriously...., you need to sign up with Facebook to make a account, how uncool is that!!
So there will be no streaming music from Spotify for me, - as I will never get a Facebook account.
So after only 13 month the power adapter for my MacBook Pro suddenly died
I not happy with this at all, a power adapter should last way longer than a year. The isolation plastic around the low voltage cord of the adapter just slitted, leaving a unprotected wire to the open, and obvious the adapter wont work anymore. Apple have been know to have quite some issues with the Magsafe Adapter, and changed the design a few years back, but my broken one are actually the newer L-shaped type generation.
A new replacement adapter cost a amazing DKK 600,00 at the Apple webstore. So I´m one unsatisfied customer, and posted a review at the Apple store.
But Apple won´t let users read it after a proper review, and this will last five business days. Lets see what happens, there´s quite a sample of broken adapters out there as one can judge by the bad reviews. This is bad for the Apple quality reputation. And I´m in a furious state, and will take this up as a warranty issue.
This mishap aside, I´m extremely satisfied with the MacBook Pro, and will not consider a PC ever again, but when spending DKK 15.000,00 on a computer I´m naturally expecting a bit more than this days event.
I would really like to experience the kind of adventure this 4 guys had in Alaska, it´s really epic, enjoy some beautiful scenery captured just so well
I have wanted to do some randone skiing for several years now. The thought of earning your every turn going downhill, off piste, after a hard climb makes me feel warm at heart, and also the thought of not doing anything bad to the climate, as we do when we go to the skiing resorts to get our self´s transported up the mountain in some kind of machine driven installation, emitting carbon dioxide in the process, is very nice I think!
Most sadly it seems I have missed the opportunity for now, maybe in a few years time I might get a second chance of experiencing this, I hope so, - but who knows? Will try to make it happen at some time though.
As a follow up on yesterdays extract from the movie ´All. I. Can.´ here´s the official trailer
"All. I. Can." are a little about the need for change, the way overdue change in lifestyle mankind needs to make immediately, in order to slow down the climate changes, or hopefully stop it.
We all need to participate, this handful of skiers will, at least that´s their message. I´m happy to see that "The North Face" outdoor clothing company participates in this.
After watching this clip I bought the entire movie from iTunes. And I can tell you it´s a fairly good one. Lots of really great shots and stunning locations.
But the movie are not as green and ecological as it appears to from this trailer, sure their is some dude stating he will never use a helicopter again to reach a summit or a hillside to launch from, how he loves skiing, and that he will be sad if his children were not going to able to due to climate changes, that´s about it. A bit to hollow for my taste.
But still, a few statement regarding the state of climate changes are better than none.
So I finally had to surrender, ice and slippery road conditions have forced salt onto our roads, so the bike is in the hall way for now
We have been blessed with a neat and warm autumn here in Denmark. But 2 weeks back we experienced the first bite of frost, and the roads where treated with a layer of salt to prevent cars to slip and slide.
So I finally surrendered and moved the bike inside. And today I stripped her down for a proper wash and wax, she needs to be well shorted and shinning when spring arrives. All the painted parts will be washed and waxed, the black plastic bits will shine as new after a treatment with some liquid silicone, and all other parts of the bike will be cleaned and washed, and asphalt drops removed with some petroleum.
Looking forward to spring and some ride time really bad.
You don´t need to visit Ischgl, or one of the other fancy ´watch me´ ski site, to flash you greatest freestyle moves...as you will see shortly, less is more and your hometown will do
This video are a bit slow going in the beginning, but I promise it will pick up, and make you easily survive the build up, and land the message. And the music just blend so well to the moving pictures.
As i recall I have posted several videos shoot with the Go Pro HERO, and for good reasons. The Go Pro HERO are the preferred toll for documenting action sports and similar epic stuff
So here´s the official Go Pro promotion video, shoving off this cameras potential to do anything and go anywhere due to the samll size, low weight and a waterproof casing.
Might get one myself before the trip to Mysterious Marocco in 2012, as I might want to do some exterior shoots and timelapses during driving, and the rough environment will probably be harsh, and I want my 5D MKII to keep working the entire trip.
A fantastic 6 minute 30 seconds long stunning timelapse
From the maker: This timelapse video was shot using the Dynamic Perception motion control rig. Pan and Tilt moves were done using a telescope head being controlled by the MX2 controller.
Lenses that were used in the video are: Canon 14mm 2.8L mk ll, Canon 24mm 1.4L mk ll, Sigma 15mm 2.8, Zeiss 28mm 2 ZF, Zeiss 35mm 2 ZF, Zeiss 50mm 1.4 ZF. The camera used for all the timelapse shots was the Canon 5D Mark II.
The slow motion shot was done using the Epic X shooting at 240fps in 2K using the RED Zoom 18-50mm 2.8.
you might want to visit camerapixo.com and register to download, or read this magnificent free magazine online
Yeah, well it´s not a normal magazine as you know it, there´s no real articles covering pages with text, instead it features several photographers and their great work, - an all visual pleasure.
The images a really really gorgeous, spanning the spectrum from landscape, food and nature photography, all the way to fashion and still photography. You don´t want to miss this.
The current issue (no. 15) features underwater photographer Elena Kalis, amongst many others. I´m already familiar with Elena Kalis work, as I have been following her on Google+ for a while now. Her underwater photography seldom shows fish or other wildlife, it´s mostly about people submerged in the ocean or a pool. So it´s an other kind of underwater photography than we´re used to - like it a lot.
Instruction video teaching the features and the workflow of LR Timelapse
Instruction video:
I suppose, and most certainly hope, the Adobe will find a way to get this neat function incorporated directly into a future version of Lightroom.
It might seem to you that this are a simple afterthought, but I have envisioned this feature in my head after the introduction of Lightroom version 2 several month ago, and thought it would be a natural expansion to the existing features in this great software, having so strong and capable editing tools already incorporated (Adobe Lightroom are currently in version 3).
But I did´t have the insights or skills at hand to make this work, or even to imagine the exposure shift function. Least at all I had no idea that a working method would be to read and write to some xml files. All I could see that it would be nice just to be able to edit the exposure time of a series of photos based on a linear algorithm.
But; LR Timelapse are capable of so much more than this. I´m really looking forward to looking closer into this neat program, and learn how to use it. I´ll need to shoot some test TL´s soon.
Just saw this video tutorial, and wanted to share it. I haven´t yet tried it out myself, but I´m heading over to lrtimelapse.com to get my copy of LR Timlapse this minute
This years November and December have been mild and quite warm so far, but winter are lurking and we might soon see some snow, -so here´s something to prepare you on
I´m actually looking forward to seeing some white and beautiful snowflakes soon. The current weather situation with fairly cold (4 degrees Celsius) and damp weather are really nasty. It will all be so much better with some snow covered fields and woods, and with a temperature a few degrees bellow zero, no winds and clear blue skies things just look so much nicer to me.
If you like beautiful landscape photos on you desktop, here´s a nice collection featured on Adventure Journal
I just discovered Adventure Journal a few days ago. It´s a nice resource with all kinds of articles about things I love, adventures and outdoor gear, photography and other stuff.
As I´m dreaming of a secodhand Toyota Landcruiser or Land Rover Defender, or even a brand new Volkswagen Amarok pick-up made for Paris-Dakar, others seems to admire the classic syncro campervan
It just puts a smile on my face, and warmth in the coldest of my heart, seeing all this fuss on the web about this classic Volkswagen Westfalia all-wheell-drive-campervan.
This might actually be the cheapest way to get a off-road-capable-overland-vehicle, it´s way cheaper than those 10 years old overpriced second hand series 100 Land cruisers, -as their good reputation for reliability and all-over-the-world access to spare parts, have shifted those Land cruisers´ price tags way above their initial true value, period.
The Syncro Campervan are in the complete other end of the spectrum. Only "downside" are, - it seems the majority are owned by a group of newly born hippies, witch I´m not really ready to be counted amongst at present time... but I might want to work on this though. It´s a true classic with nearly the same status as the one of the iconic Beetle from the same manufacturer.
And the concept are still going strong today, Volkswagen now produces and sell the T5 4-MOTION California model, a new interpretation with all-whell-drive and the exactly same interior lay-out, but with a hefty 2011 price tag (DKK 650.000,-).
After reading a rather long article about Kille Enna in the morning paper, it occurred to me that I, to my memory, never had heart the story of this great chef, or even seen her books
Apparently Kille Enna where a natural gifted chef, quickly getting a big name in the restaurant business throughout the entire planet.
Just half a year after she had finished her education as a chef she had job offers from the big places. The years went on and Kille devoted her life to cooking great food and stunning meals, with no spare time left to do other things we normally fill our life´s with. Sadly, It all ended very suddenly one day when she fated, exhausted from the demanding work and the many hours she put into it.
Kille then made a change in life and lifestyle, she retired from the business overnight, and with nearly no money to her name she bought a very small house with some land attached to it, in Sweden near Ystad.
Kille has now devoted her life to growing food on her own land, and writing cooking books, enjoying the many lonesome daily hours spend in the fields or in the greenhouse, and in developing new food recipes for her books.
This is want a DSLR looks like after a year on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, not nice
Markus Thompson, who was scuba diving in Deep Bay (outside of Vancouver) discovered a Canon EOS 1000D camera. Thompson pulled the SD card to discover not only that he could recover the images, but that they revealed the camera had been sitting in the salty brine for over a year.
Thompson took to Google+, posting the story and a few identifying details he was able to dig up from the photos. Within a day, the hive mind was able to track down and contact the owner, a firefighter in British Columbia. We´re not saying you should be thankful for Google+, but the actual people who use it sure seem like good folks.
If your´e into photography you might want to stop by this blog from time to time
The website "A Photo Editor" are being run by the former Photography Director Rob Haggart. I really like the entry dealing with the new winter 2011 Patagonia Catalog, some great pics.
And while we´re talking about outdoor clothing I would like to recommend the all new Haglöfs Actives Merino Zip Top. It´s made by 100 % Merino Wool (Mulesing free), 18.5 micron, jersey knit, 153 g/m², this type of wool will be able to keep you extremely warm, great product. And it comes in Black and also the lovely Strato Blue, witch I got for myself.
The new trend in material for inner layers for activity clothing are a new way to use wool. The Merino wool, witch ie. Haglöfs and SmartWool uses, will keep you warm and also manage moister, allowing humidity to escape from your body. Research are claimed to show that because of wool´s effective moisture management, you maintain a lower and more stable core body temperature when wearing wool next to skin instead of synthetics. Merino wool manages moisture better than cotton, smarter than synthetics and more comfortable in any weather condition.
So, the days off all synthetic materials for inner layers are gone, these days there´s even firms emerging witch are dedicated to making only wool-based clothing, and that alone. Socks for extended hiking in cold climates have been a mixture of wool and synthetic materials for years now, I think it started out with the firm "SmartWool". The wool will keep your toes and feet warm, the synthetic adding will transport moisture, and prolong the life of the socks, easing the wear and tear on the wool fibers.
I own quite a few of their smart socks, and have been very pleased with the performance, I also used them when doing some alpine hiking in the winter in Scotland a few years back. SmartWool have moved on from making exclusively socks, to fabricate all kinds of outdoor clothing, check their website, there´s some nice stuff (though I still prefer Haglöfs).
I´m still acquiring things to equip the car in preparation for the 2012 drive to the Western Sahara, this time a fridge-freezer for the car
ENGEL fridge-freezer MT 45F-S (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L zoom lens)
In order to survive, or rather to be more comfortable, in the heat of the Sahara desert, I bought a transportable fridge-freezer to keep in the car, so that the food will be able to keep cold and last for more than just one day.
And, as many of you will know, when i buy stuff, it has to be the best that money can buy (within reason off course). Top of the range, - best of the best, in transportable fridges are made by ENGEL, simple as that. The thing about the ENGEL fridges are that they use a special kind of compressor motor that will be able to function under the constant impact from the vibrations it will surfer under during extended drives on unpaved roads, or going more or less off-road, - and further more, it will keep working despite this ruff treatment.
I got over my head and got a massive 40 litre version, the so called MT 45F-S model. The fridge will run from the cars 12V battery, or from a 220V in house power outlet. While ENGEL Fridge-Freezers are not made in Australia they have become an Australian icon, a true out-back product.
Over forty five years ago Sawafuji Electric Co. Ltd Japan, purchased the drawing of a unique product, a swing motor. They proceeded to develop this into the motor and pump used to power the ENGEL Portable fridge-freezer we know today.
From its early beginnings in the 1960´s this unit has evolved into a powerful and efficient cooling unit. This is the only compressor of its type in the world and is wholly owned by Sawafuji Electric Co. Ltd Japan.
The fridge will also come in very handy on future trips into desolated areas. As I plan a return to Morocco in late 2012 also, and at least one to two more trips to my beloved amazing Iceland.
The BMW 2012 version of the S 1000 RR are still the most powerful production bike to date, and now it comes with heated grips as an option, just what I din´t needed
Motorcycle.com says: "The class-dominating BMW S 1000 RR is now even more potent and usable for 2012. The German manufacturer has set a very high bar for its Japanese competitors."
Time lapse sequences of photographs taken with a special low-light 4K-camera by the crew of expedition 28 & 29 on board the International Space Station from August to October, 2011
I still stand in wonder why they do this, ride the TT Race on The Isle of Man, going up to 300 km/h in between stone fences and houses on roads normally open to public traffic. It´s just some kind of shear death defying madness.
...and nearly every year a rider are killed during the practice or in the race.
Seeing this sexy and very beautiful Italian sailboat makes me want to get a sailboat
Sailing were an enormous part of my life in my early years, from the early teen period and well into my thirties. I used to race sail boats at least two to there times per week during the years of studding to become a mechanical engineer at the engineering university at Elsinore.
I stared out in age 15 buying my own Flipper dingy, witch I sailed for some years. It progressed from here to keel boats, a very fast one called a 717. The Kjærulf designed 717 were a very fast boat for four adults, being a demanding boat to handled in winds above 10 m/s. It had every trim option available, witch normally belonged on a plus 45 feet performance boat. So this period learned me how to handle a boat in every weather condition. From the 717 we went on to a Dynamic 35, also a very fast sailboat for it´s size, with a very tall mast and massive sails.
The Dynamic 35 were a totally different type of boat than the 717. The 717 were a very wide sailing machine, nicknamed the oil rig in the sailing club, capable of endless power surfing when the wind speed got above 15 m/s, the Dynamic 35 were long and very slim. The massive sail area made it a superior and fast boat, for it´s size, in winds from 7-8 m/s and upwards.
Sailing were for leisure, but most of all a pursuit on the achievement and the satisfaction in getting the boat to go just that tenth of a knot faster.
We all wanted to go faster than the boat next to us, to win the race, not only to join, not to be second best, it was all about the success in the win. And we did win. Most of the wins were in harsh weather conditions with very strong winds and demanding seas, the kind of situation were boat handling were crucial to the success.
The best single achievement for me were to finish as number 10 in the 1993 European Regatta in Italy on Lake Garda in a 18 feet Hobie catamaran, amongst a big fleet of boats packed with pro and semi pro racers from all over Europe. That´s the best way to spend a week of summer holiday in.
Yeah, so now when watching this lovely yacht on the water I really really miss those days of sailing.
Will someone comfort me... please, anybody?
As you might have noticed I have been browsing Vimeo the last fey days. This find are simply the most epic timelapse I have seen to this date. It left me breathless...
Out of nothing, we suddenly had no winds, sunshine, blue skies and 15 Degrees Celsius today. Naturally I had to take the bike for a run, lovely.
Hornbæk harbor (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L zoom lens. 1/1000 sec. @ f/4.0, ISO 100)
Yes, this shoot with the butterfly are actually from today. Nice she would pick my bike to soak up the sun rays (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L zoom lens. 1/50 sec. @ f/13, ISO 400)
The autumn colored woods (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L zoom lens. 1/60 sec. @ f/4.0, ISO 100)
All these photos were shoot with my 24-105 mm. f/4.0L zoom lens. I also shoot some frames with the 17-40 mm. f/4.0L and the 50 mm. f/1.4 lens today.
The feel and look of the pictures delivered by the 24-105 mm. are by far my favorite, and it still amazes me with the quality of pictures that it delivers. I´m also quit happy with the prime 50 mm. f/1.4, - but I´m now quite satisfied with my 17-40 mm. f/4.0L, might have to try out a 16-35 mm. f/2.8L MKII. Lets see, - my first priority at present are the 8-15 mm. f/40L fisheye zoom lens. Might get one within the next week if all works out as planned.
As a follow up to the unexpected success for the Canon EOS 5D MKII as a cinematic camera, Canon today reveals a dedicated digital 35 mm. full-frame cinematic camera
From Canon Professional Network website:
"The Cinema EOS System builds on Canon’s 74-year history of innovation and expertise in the field of optical and imaging technology. It offers compatibility with Canon’s wide range of high-performance EF lenses to provide cinematographers with an unprecedented array of creative possibilities to ensure that no story is left untold.
Canon has already earned accolades in the entertainment industry for the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera, launched in 2008, which has been used around the world in the production of blockbuster motion pictures, hit television programmes, documentaries and short films: the Cinema EOS System is the next step in a journey that began with EOS Movie.
“As a leading company in digital imaging, Canon’s debut in the film and TV production industry provides a tremendous opportunity to enter into a thriving market,” said Fujio Mitarai, Chairman and CEO, Canon Inc. “Reflecting upon the achievements that Canon EOS Digital SLRs have had in the industry thus far, we are confident the new Cinema EOS series products will bring that success to a whole new level.”
With the debut of the Cinema EOS System Canon has announced seven new 4K Cinema Lenses that complement the current diverse line-up of interchangeable Canon EF lenses for its EOS SLR cameras.
Canon has also revealed the EOS C300/C300 PL interchangeable-lens Digital Cinema Cameras equipped with a Super 35mm-equivalent CMOS sensor, plus news that a new DSLR camera that features a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor to support the recording of 4K video is currently being developed."
This is really a great TL. My kids and I have visited all of the featured places during the 2010 and 2011 trips. Nice to revisit this beautiful spots ones more
So if you have this kind of money to go around you can preorder the 1D-X at the UK based Calumet webstore as of today
The amount of cash needed to get one of the new 1D-X bodies are scary. Of course the body are aimed at pro photographers, but still DKK 45.000,00 are a high price I think.
The body won´t be available until March 2012, and prices are not fixed as of writing, I recon it won´t differ a lot from the preliminarily price quote. My guess are that the demand on the 5D MKII will continue for while, compared to the spec. of the 1D-X it´s a real bargain.
Oh, by the way I´ll have to admit I´m actually on G+, never liked Facebook, never went there at all. But Google+ seems to be a nice media for photographers and other creative people.
But still, will I have the strength to update my weblog, and G+, - I doubt it. But it´s easy to keep tracks of the doing of people that inspires me and teach me new stuff, like Scott Kelby, Trey Ratcliff, Moose Peterson, Terje Sorgjerd, Matt Kloskowski, Zack Arias and Elena Kalis, just to mention those I follow on G+ at present time.
2 x Canon 5D MKII, some spare time and nice weather for a while = 26 Gigapixels panorama of Paris....
Paris 26 Gigapixels is the name of the biggest assembled panoramic image of the world. It shows Paris in a very high definition. A gigapixel is 1 billion pixels! The image is a stitching of more than 2000 individual photos. Paris 26 Gigapixels has been shot on September 8th, 2009 and is now available for everyone (as of march 2010).
"I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me"
Picture of the catalog. (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 50 mm. f/1.4 lens. 1/100 sec. @ f/1.4, ISO 100)
"I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me".
These words are from the catalog from Gregory Crewdson´s photo exhibition at Den Sorte Diamant (The Royal Danish library), where I went this Wednesday with the kids and Mads (Thank you for suggesting this).
At the exhibition there´s there series of Crewdson´s famous work at display, "Sanctuary", "Butterflies" and "Beneath the Roses".
All the photos are very special, showing places in a extraordinary way. "Beneath the Roses" are indeed very outstanding, displaying ordinary scenes from a small American town. Crewdson plans every picture into the smallest possible detail, he builds a true set like when shooting a movie sequence. Everything has it´s planed place, everybody in the scene have a preplanned position, everything are lighted in a controlled manner either with natural or artificial light, - all in all a true Hollywood production.
I overheard a guide explaining that every photo, or piece of art as some might call it, are made by combining up to 40 individual exposures in Photoshop, Crewdson want´s every detail in the photo to be correctly lit, and focused perfect. This way of working gives the photos a unreal look, we are all used to viewing photos having smaller or larger areas being out of focus or blurred by motion, a way to try to control the path of the onlookers eyes´ around within the frame of the art piece. Crewdson does the exact opposite.
In order to control the composition of his pictures he also often makes sketches of the set, he scouts for locations and plans for month before embarking on the journey to make a photo, quite a very special person.
The exhibition opened on September 23, 2011 and will close on January 28, 2012. Monday to Saturday 10:00-19:00.
The EOS-1D X is the new flagship camera in the Canon DSLR range, taking the best of the EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds cameras and melding them into a single unit
The camera will kill both of the older 1D and 1Ds models, merging them into this one. The camera are therefor a compromise from the advantages they each had, the 1D -speed, the 1Ds -image quality.
The 1D-X will offer 14 frames per second in 18 MP resolution. This is a step forward in the fps and image quality game, thus the current 1Ds offers 21 MP, -like the 5D MKII, and that´s a step backwards if you shot landscape photos, fashion or still, but in the end maybe the difference are´t that big, we will learn when the body releases in March 2012.
The signal to noise ratio should have seen a boost, so i might actually shoot better than the present 5D MKII, we will also wait to learn if this is true. I will keep my 5D MKII i think, and wait for a might be MKIII. Though there might actually not be a 5D MKIII; -Canon have sold nearly zero 1Ds cameras, the price tag being to high compared to the 5D MKII that has the same full frame sensor, a magnesium body, ect.
To me the most interesting new feature are the multiple exposure mode, witch will offer in camera process of up to nine individual exposures, hence offering single frame HDR in camera. Cool!
For more than 10 years I have been enjoying skiing, I love and enjoy the hole idea of a skiing holiday, but this winters holiday will be quite different
It all started way back when my youngest kid were around 8 or 9 years of age, on a tiny local ski resort in eastern Sweden with friends, - skiing where new to the hole family at that time, but most of us enjoyed the learning process and playing around in the snow and the occasional sunshine.
In the process of getting better, and faster, as a part of the new obsession, I ended up taking on at least one to two weeks of skiing during the season. Sweden, Norway and different parts of Austria have been visited, mostly with friends and the kids, and lately also my daughters boyfriend have joined in. We are all quite experienced and capable riders today.
But this winter I´m not going on any skiing holiday at all. My thoughts are that I might miss the thrill of the speed, the joy of control when carving, and most of all the beautiful views from the mountain ranges. What I won´t miss will be the prospect of a crowed queue to the lift and the potential overfilled tavern and restaurants.
But all this it will not matter at all, because I will instead be going on a quite big adventure to The Western Sahara in Southern Morocco. Yes, - I can confirm I will be driving the Touareg to the Southerly part off Spain, and take the ferry to Morocco from here, - and sail towards a big experience in Sahara.
The Western Sahara are a desolated place and you could easily get lost in this wast desert and the mountain regions, enjoying great nature, witch will be quite different from anything I have experienced earlier. I´m looking forward to this with enormous expectations, and I will also take joy in the process to get the car transformed to a real solid expedition vehicle during the upcoming months. Some important parts are already on order.
The wining photos from the World Press Photo 2011 competition are at display form 7 Oct. to 2 Nov. in POLITIKKENs building in Copenhagen
So - as interested in photography as I am, I naturally went to Copenhagen this Saturday, in order to see all the best press photos taken in the world during the period of this year.
I have to tell you that I left the exhibition with my spirits very low and felling quite sad at heart. Certainly there where some fine photos at display, but most of the winning photos displayed the sadness, and the failure to obtain happiness, of individuals and groups of humans.
Nearly all the photos displayed the humiliation or the suffering and death of humans, caused either by nature catastrophe or by hands of other human beings, being it from either a political or religious reason. I think that most people will leave the exhibition with the felling that people on earth are 80 % unhappy, living in areas of nature catastrophe or in refugee camps.
Even the people displayed in some photos when attending a Irish cattle show had an empty expression in their eyes, they aught to be happy in that environment that are supposed to be a festival. But still, they sure did´t looked like they where having any fun.
To balance all the misery out, their after all where a few beautiful wildlife photographs at display. I know press photography are about documenting, and state some kind of report on the state of things, and that´s all right, and I´m complaining on the quality or subjects of the photos, just putting to record that to judge from this collection of the worlds finest press photos, the place called earth are a sad place, - and we live a miserably life as humans.
I´m prod to tell you that one of my photos from this summers trip to Iceland will be featured in the official printed 2012 Volkswagen Touareg calender
(Canon EOS 5D MKII, 17-40 mm. f/4.0L lens. 1/50 sec. @ f/11, ISO 100)
Some time ago I received a request to accept the use of my photo showing my Touareg beside the old American Dakota airplane wreck witch I took during this years summer holiday to Iceland.
Naturally I granted the permission to use the photo.
The photo was actually shot in a quite demanding weather situation, the winds were blowing strong from the lava beach nearby, and the rain were pouring down, witch are hard to spot in the final result, - well at least I like to believe that.
I´m proud that this photo have been chosen to be featured in the printed Volkswagen calendar, I´m shure that numerous photos have been submitted and reviewed to be included in the final layout, - though this shoot are not great art. But as Joe McNally would say, "Just put you camera in a unusual place, or in front of something unusual, and things will happen" - or something like that, well - anyway you will know what he means.
The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald) is a wooded mountain range in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany. It is bordered by the Rhine valley to the west and south. The highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 meters.
It´s odd to think that I have actually passed just west off this region numerous times on the autobahn, when going to Southern France for summer holidays with my family. And knew nothing of it´s existence. Might be a good place to stop by on the way to Morocco in 2012.
The Black Forrest are actually ranked on the short list of the natural wonders of the world:
1. Amazon, South America
2. Angel Falls, Venezuela
3. Bay of Fundy, Canada
4. Black Forest, Germany
5. Bu Tinah Island, UAE
6. Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
7. Dead Sea, Israel, Jordan, Palestine
8. El Yunque, Puerto Rico
9. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
10. Grand Canyon, USA
11. Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Papua New Guinea
12. Ha-Long Bay, Vietnam
13. Iguazu Falls, Argentina, Brazil
14. Jeita Grotto, Lebanon
15. Jeju Island, South Korea
16. Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
17. Komodo Island, Indonesia
18. Maldives, Maldives
19. Masurian Lake District, Poland
20. Matterhorn/Cervin, Italy, Switzerland
21. Milford Sound, New Zealand
22. Mud volcanoes, Azerbaijan
23. Puerto Princesa underground river, Philippines
24. Sundarbans Delta, Bangladesh
25. Table Mountain, South Africa
26. Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia
27. Mount Vesuvius, Italy
28. Yushan, Taiwan
Seems that the destinations I seek out to do some holiday adventures in have been covered before by some enthusiasts digital map folks, very neat indeed
Screen dump featuring part of the Morocco map in the Garmin Basecamp application on a Mac (ver. 3.2.2)
I had the luck to locate a free downloadable very detailed map of Iceland last year, and I had it with me on the Garmin Nüvi GPS unit I originally bought for the motorbike, now mounted in the Touareg for this occasion.
While doing research for a future trip to Morocco, and maybe the Western Shara, I again had luck, and found a digital map covering Morocco suitable for the small Garmin Nüvi unit.
This will come in very handy during the trip, and make navigation quite a bit easier. There are also several websites with travel logs and insight on Morocco to gather good information from, so with the additional books I´ll have base material for several days of studding, looking forward to this.
I have made a single page collection with all the diary posts from the Iceland trip this summer
(Canon EOS 5D MKII and 24-105 mm. f/4.0L lens. 1/50 sec. @ f/16, ISO 100)
I posted a link to this on the German Touareg Club Forum, and in the International Club Touareg forums a week ago. This caused 158 unique visits to this actual page within a few days, and also some kind feedback from members:
"What a great photographer and writer! May i forward the link to others?"
"Iceland has always been on my list of places to visit. I think, after viewing your post, it just moved to the top of my list."
"Great pictures and travelog. Thanks for posting."
just to quote a few. I´m really very happy to get this kind of positive response. Makes me what to do even more travel and landscape photography.
-- Steve Jobs, Stanford commencement speech, June 2005
"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
I stumbled over this extract from one of Steve Jobs speeches on someones google+ account, and wanted you so get it to. Makes you think a bit, dosen´t it...
The happiest time of my life were - and still are - when taking on an adventure, we all need to be adventurous from time to time
Following a small desolated track leading to the Northern perimeter of the icecap Vatnajökull in Iceland, - one of the bigger adventures (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 24-105 mm. f/4.0L lens. 1/100 sec. @ f/11, ISO 100)
Adventures don´t have to be big epic journeys involving great risks and lasting months or even years.
An adventure are when your´re doing something out of the ordinary, tackling problems witch caught you out of guard. Experiencing something new, seeing new sites and landscapes, - well just doing something you don´t normally do.
So you could have an adventure over a day or a weekend, visit some places you haven´t been before, it dosen´t have to be far away in some distant exotic place.
I have had great adventures recently in places just a short ferry fare away, or as close to home as a bridge crossing to Sweden, discovering lovely places with big history, witch I did not knew existed. For instance trying to locate, and finding the accident petroglyphs found in Skåne in Sweden not far from Malmö, engraved in the middleage on a rock side in the center of a cornfield.
So hurry, go out there and have a little adventure.
Every website, blog, news media, television show will today tell the story of Steve Jobs and his great influence on computing
And all will be well deserved, Apple and Steve Jobs have had a very great impact on how we use computes, tablets, mobile phones, media storage and playback, software and so much more.
Steve Jobs will be remembered like some of the all times famous people and politicians, and indeed well deserved. He will be compared to Henry Ford and Edison, - he belongs in that premiere league.
The Internet and printed media offers many sources to those aspiring to do an overland adventure - Overland Journal are just one example
(Overland Journal´s website)
Overland Journal are a American magazine with five annual issues. I can´t remember how I stumbled on it, must have been somewhere one the web I recon.
But anyway, - I just had to subscribe, and as I was at it I also ordered two back-issues, I´m looking forward to getting them in my mailbox from over there sometime soon, - I hope.
On their website you´re able to download a PDF-back-issue, and it sure looks like one great magazine, solid articles and a very beautiful layout and a stunning 128 pages in each print. The website are also very well laid out I think, an inspiration in stylish webdesign.
My problem with keeping old magazines will grow raptly from now, I tend to keep magazines, not throwing the old one in the bin went a new issue arrives. My relationship with magazines are the as with books, I keep them for a might be reread.
And as I subscribe to several magazines on bicycles, motorcycles (3 different ones), photography, Land Rovers and High Fidelity (2 different ones) I´ll have to let go of them, or else the apartment soon will be filled with them.
I was thinking of joining OneLife Adventure for a guided trip to the Western Shara in February to March 2012
The route from Elsinore to Tarifa in Southern Spain, 3.200 km.
I was thinking of joining OneLife Adventure for a guided trip to the Western Sahara from February 25th to March 12th 2012 to get a felling of the country and the hassles involved when driving in the desert. But when I made the route planing on Google I realized that the drive to Southern Spain alone would be a marathon of 3.200 km., - it made me think twice. With a additional planed route in Morocco of 3.500 km. the total trip will amount to a massive 10.000 km.
The party will use two days in Morocco driving from Tanger in Northern Morocco to the Western Sahara, witch is located south of the Canaria Islands. No wonder the expedition are planned in February to March, thus to avoid the hottest seasons.
I will have to think this over twice, since driving by my self from my home to Southern Spain, alone an estimated drive of 32 hours, might be a bit on the high side, and as much as I like driving this will be ruff. But still - I would love the experience - so I´ll see what will happen in the near future.
Well, actually the book by Tom Sheppard (Quiet for a Tuesday) arrived months ago; and I read it during the summer holiday trip to Iceland. Apart from the featured ones, two more arrived, I need more time to look at these though.
Tom Sheppard have been driving in the African Sahara for decades, both as a private person and while being an employee in the British Army.
"Quit for a Tuesday" are in a form like a dairy, filled with hints on how to get around in the Algerian Sahara, - how to dig your car out, how to navigate using GPS´s, satellite maps and printed maps, and also how to navigate without any maps at all, since the Algerian government confiscated Tom´s collection of printed maps and satellite photos.
"First Overland" are a classic, and the first book on overland trips, since the trip in two Land Rovers were the first true overland to be performed, driving from London to Singapore, and back.
A well written book, and I´m enjoying it very much, I´m a third into it at present time.
I had to put "First Overland" aside for a bit to read some of the pages in "Morocco Overland", a guide to doing your own overland trip, and a very inspiring book packed with sound advice.
So, lots of reading and planing ahead towards the 2012 Morocco adventure.
